Programme

  • Lancaster - 'Strata'
  • Lyadov - Mazurka for Orchestra 'Village Scene by the Inn'
  • Strauss - Horn Concerto No.2 in Eb major
  • Tchaikovsky - Symphony No.4 in F minor

French Horn: Annemarie Federle
Conductor: Simon Wright
Leader: Fiona Love

The orchestra's final concert this season sees a welcome return by one of this country's finest horn players. Annemarie Federle will be playing the second of Richard Strauss's horn concertos - dedicated to his father who had premiered concerto No.1. We are very fortunate indeed to have Annemarie with us again in York - this will be a must-see concert.

The concert starts with Strata, a composition written in 2013 by Dr David Lancaster, a lecturer at York St John University, which was inspired by a visit to an artwork exhibition 'Picturing Social Order' at Leeds City Art Gallery. This is then followed by a rarely performed Mazurka for Orchestra called 'Village Scene by the Inn' composed by Anatoly Lyadov who was a contemporary of Tchaikovsky.

The second half will feature an orchestral favourite; Tchaikovsky always wrote music with his heart on his sleeve, and the fourth symphony is a typical example of his emotional rollercoaster writing for full symphony orchestra.
