Student Player Workshop with Adam Swayne (RNCM)
1st June, 2025

York Guildhall Orchestra works in partnership with the York Music Hub to deliver workshops run by professional musicians for talented young musicians in the local area. These workshops are not only an excellent opportunity for young people to learn directly from a professional performer to aid their progression but also provide invaluable experience of performing in front of others.

The second workshop of the 2025 season will focus on piano.

When: 1.00pm until 3:30pm on Sunday 1st June
Where: Recital Room (Drama Studio), St Peter's School, York, YO30 6AB - (Download a campus map here - Building 7)

The workshop is open to friends, family and the general public. There is a charge of £5 for each audience member and is payable cash on the door. Each masterclass participant is entitled to two free audience tickets. Participants’ teachers, York Music Hub Approved Tutors and York Guildhall Orchestra Patrons and Sponsors can attend free of charge.

Dr Adam Swayne

Pianist and composer, Adam Swayne studied at the University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music before completing his doctorate as a Fulbright Scholar at Northwestern University in the USA.

His principal teachers were Ursula Oppens, John Gough and John Casken. He now combines performing and composing with his role as Deputy Head of Keyboard Studies at the RNCM. He has performed in festivals throughout the UK and abroad, including on BBC Radio and Television and at the BBC Proms.

His “blistering” first solo CD was selected as an Instrumental Monthly Choice by BBC Music Magazine and also received two nominations at the 2019 Opus Klassik awards in Germany. His “powerful” second CD, a commemoration of 20 years since 9/11, was launched at the Wigmore Hall and reviewed on BBC Radio 3’s Record Review. He is the co-artistic director and pianist for leading contemporary group the Riot Ensemble.
