Flute

Della Blood

Della was born in the City of Sheffield and developed an interest in music from an early age. However, it wasn’t until the age of 13, and after hearing the flautist James Galway, that she decided to learn the flute. Della graduated from Huddersfield Polytechnic (as it was then known) and subsequently studied with Trevor Wye, Kate Hill, Clare Southworth and Rachel Brown at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where she gained a Post Graduate diploma in performance. Since then, Della has carved a successful career as a freelance musician and teacher working in both the public and private sectors. She currently works for the East Riding Schools’ Music Service, St. Peter’s School in York and Pocklington School. Della is principal flute with York Guildhall Orchestra and has performed concertos with Scarborough Symphony Orchestra and York Symphony Orchestra playing Mozart’s 1st flute concerto in G and Chaminade Concertino on a number of occasions. Della iplays on a Powell flute which she initially borrowed from the lovely, late Jean Kershaw (Director of the Helmsley Arts Centre until 2023). Jean loaned the flute to her for over 25 years until Della finally purchased it outright in 2021!! Della enjoys gardening, and walking with her dog Pip.
