- Aaron Copland – Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo
- Ernst von Dohnányi – Variations on a Nursery Song
(soloist: Martin Roscoe, piano)
- Dmitri Shostakovich – Jazz Suite No.2
- Arturo Márquez – Danzón No.2
Conductor: Simon Wright
Leader: Fiona Love
We are are delighted that Martin Roscoe (who dazzled us with Beethoven last season) will be returning in May to play Dohnányi’s Variations on a Nursery Song. This work deserves much more performances as it is great fun and has one of the best musically ‘funny’ openings of any piece in the orchestra repertoire – guaranteed to put a smile on everyone’s face!
The Copland is a wonderful showpiece for the orchestra – many familiar tunes put into an orchestral suite from his ballet of the same name.
We will be letting our hair down in the second half with Shostakovich’s Jazz Suite and Márquez’s Danzón to bring our Barbican anniversary season to a rip-roaring close.
Please note that whilst we will endeavour to perform the concert as shown, the orchestra reserves the right to amend the concert programme, soloist and ticket pricing should circumstances require.
